Edmond Legacy Trees
Edmond’s urban forest provides many environmental, health, and economic benefits, but trees also have cultural significance. The Edmond Legacy Trees program highlights individual trees that stand out from other trees in the community for significance related to one of the following Legacy criteria:
Tree Size - the largest trees in the community, relative to mature size of the species. These are essentially the local “champion trees”.
Botanical Interest – a tree possessing a very unusual characteristic that sets it apart from other trees in Edmond.
Historical Significance - trees that are tied to some part of Edmond’s history, located on a historic site, or exceeding 100 years in age.
Community Ties – trees that may have a very unusual story associated with them, contribute to strengthening community ties, or were dedicated as part of a significant community event.
Landmark Trees - trees that are in a visible location and have features making them very recognizable/well-known within the community.
Acknowledgment
Urban Forestry has partnered with Dr. Chad King and the University of Central Oklahoma Biology Department to perform age assessments on trees qualifying under Historical Significance using dendrochronology, the study of tree growth rings. Thank you to Dr. King and his students for their contribution to Edmond Legacy Trees! Tree ages will be listed in the Legacy Tree profiles for applicable trees.
